2009 - Denkers in de grond. Een homerun langs 40 graven.
Filosoof/ schrijver Maarten Doorman en beeldend kunstenaar Fredie Beckmans reisden door Europa, langs 40 graven van beroemde filosofen. Daarvan deden ze wekelijks verslag op de Achterpagina van NRC Handelsblad Doorman zet de gedachten en het leven van deze denkers trefzeker uiteen en spiegelt ze gewiekst aan de omstandigheden. Dit levert mooie schetsen op van soms lieflijke, dan weer naargeestige begraafplaatsen met hun vaste bezoekers, en hilarische anekdotes over de begrafenis of het graf.

2007 - Paralipomena. Opstellen over kunst, filosofie en literatuur.
.Paralipomena zijn dingen waar je stilzwijgend aan voorbijgaat of die je zelfs met opzet weglaat. In deze bundel opstellen staat de filosoof, criticus en dichter Maarten Doorman wel stil bij een aantal van die dingen. Bij de toekomst van de beeldhouwkunst bijvoorbeeld, en bij de overeenkomst tussen Mozart en Lou Reed, bij de haast religieuze vooroordelen tegen de canon, bij een paar achttiende-eeuwse romans, bij engagement in de kunst, bij Wittgenstein en de poëzie, straat-namen, Nietzsche en de onvermijdelijke romantiek van het landschap.

- Kiekertak en Klotterbooke: Gedachten over de canon (oratie).
De afgelopen decennia hebben zich grote veranderingen voltrokken in het voortgezet en universitair onderwijs. Bij die veranderingen is een cruciale vraag goeddeels buiten beschouwing gebleven: wat willen wij onze kinderen leren?
De kern van deze kwestie is de discussie over de canon. Wat vinden wij belangrijk om over te dragen, welke geschiedenis en literatuur definieert wie we zijn en hoe wij handelen? De hedendaagse orthodoxie in de geesteswetenschappen wantrouwt de canon als zodanig, beziet haar door een sociologische bril en maakt haar verdacht. Hierdoor verdwijnen grote delen van ons verleden en van onze literatuur, zonder dat daar een serieuze discussie over wordt gevoerd. In deze oratie worden vier dogma’s van achterdocht jegens de canon nader bekeken en van kritisch commentaar voorzien. Het betoog loop uit op een pleidooi voor de rol van kritiek.

Modernism and postmodernism are the pivotal concepts that Western man uses in his attempts to come to grips with his situation in the early years of this new millennium. But in The Romantic Imperative, philosopher and poet Maarten Doorman shows us that our contemporary way of life is actually influenced more than we may realise by the Romantic revolution of the early nineteenth century. For it was then that people began seeing themselves not as creatures who existed, but as creatures who became, who were in possession of an authentic ‘I’ that was more than the sum of their strict societal roles, and who had received the calling to be creative.
Two centuries later, that call is still heard clearly, even in the remotest corners of our culture. In the panorama Doorman presents to his readers, the modern world appears as a bundle of contradictions that can only be understood when seen in the light of their common Romantic background.

2003 - Art in Progress: A Philosophical Response to the End of the Avant-Garde.
Art is supposed to be of our time or rather to be part of the future. This perspective has reigned the arts and art criticism for more than a century. The author of this challenging and erudite essay shows how the idea of progress in the arts came up and he describes the enormous retorical impact of progressive concepts. After the end of the avant-garde the idea of progress in the arts collapsed and soon philosophers like Arthur Danto proclaimed the end of art.

Doorman investigates the crippling effects of postmodernism on the arts and proposes a new form of progress to understand contemporary art. Its history can still be seen as a process of accumulation: works of art comment on each other, enriching each other’s meanings. These complex relationships lead to progress in both the sensibility of the observer and the significance of the works of art.

2000 - Filosofen van deze tijd.
This is an introduction to modern philosophy and contains 25 monographies of the most important philosophers of the last 50 years, starting with Heidegger and Wittgenstein and ending with Martha Nussbaum and Bruno Latour, written by specialists in the field. It is not only a history of contemporary philosophy, it also gives an overview of philosophical problems for the next few years.
